Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, resting in the shadow of ice-capped volcanoes

Explore Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

The ‘White City’ of Arequipa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rests in the shadow of ice-capped volcanoes. A highlight of the city is the beautiful Santa Catalina Convent, a walled colonial town within a city, opened to the public in 1970 after 400 years of secrecy.

From here you can visit the Colca Canyon, with its rugged and dramatic landscape dominated by volcanoes. The Colca Canyon is one of the world’s deepest canyons and one of the few places in the world you are virtually guaranteed to see the wild Andean Condor.

The area is also home to some of the oldest Peruvian indigenous groups – the Collaguas and Cabanas. The landscape has been completely fashioned by the hands of the pre-Incan farmers, and to this day the land is farmed as it was 1500 years ago to grow indigenous crops including potatoes, maize, quinoa and beans.

Where to stay in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon

There are some charming hotels in Arequipa ranging from 5* to characterful B&Bs. Usually our guests would spend one night only in Arequipa after arriving from Lima and before heading on to the Colca Valley. In the Colca Valley, where guests typically spend 2 or 3 nights there is just one place we recommend and that is the Colca Lodge. Amazing location, great service, good price point and the chance to take a plunge in thermal pools heated from the nearby volcano. Click below to find out more, or contact Rachel.
